Book Review

Andrew Lyke is a well-known man of faith in the Roman Catholic community. He is one who is unapologetically black and truly Catholic. And while he is the nephew of the noteworthy Bishop James P Lyke, Andrew has made a name for himself. He was a campus minister at DePaul University. He led the Office of Black Catholics in the Chicago Archdiocese. [Prior to that assignment, he was the Coordinator of Marriage Ministry.]

[Andrew] and his wife Terri founded the Arusi Network, a non-profit organization that helps strengthen African American marriages. These are just a few things Andrew has been known for. Andrew has been invited to speak at several venues. He has written several articles and reflections on topics dealing with spirituality, family and social justice. But in his book “A Private Collection of Heartfelt Thoughts” Andrew not only shares some of his public thoughts and observations but a few private works which was not available publicly. His writings are in the form of poetry, prayers, reflections and eulogies. The topics covered in these works are from his experiences and observations.

The pieces Andrew selected for this book were carefully curated. What is noticeable about the works in this book is the subjects he centers on. While they range in various topics, the book delves into three noticeable subjects: God, family and justice. Andrew’s faith is prominent in this book. His faith not only reflects his love for God but also his family which he cherishes. And with his love of God and family, his purpose is rooted in justice. Andrew articulates his thoughts in a very spiritual way. If you’re looking for substantive contemplation that deals with an interesting spiritual journey, I would highly recommend this book.
